PUT ON YOUR (FISHING) POETRY HAT
Not long ago, my husband and I went to dinner at one of our favorite local seafood restaurants. It’s a comfy, rustic place with all kinds of nautical mementos displayed on the walls and suspended from the rafters, so I wasn’t surprised when I saw a dusty captain’s hat hanging over our table. I was surprised, though, when I noticed that there was writing on the hat. At first, I thought it was a recipe, but I was further surprised, even delighted, when I realized that the writing was a poem. A POEM. And not just any poem, a fishing poem! Hanging from the rafters was a fishing poetry hat. Here it is:
Isn’t that grand? It made me so happy that I wanted to put on my own fishing poetry hat, even though it’s the heart of winter and it's blistering cold in many places. Here is my inspiration poem in the form of a diamante called “Fish Poem.”
Fish
slippery shiny
swimming darting wiggling
catch it quick – before it gets away
squirming turning dashing
fresh sparkly
poem.

The inspiration for poetry truly is everywhere. Even dusty and hanging from the rafters.
What kind of poetry hat are you wearing these days?

Good metaphor! They do both tend to get away easily if we're not careful.
What a delightful find! I would like a fishing poetry hat or a poetry fishing hat too! Would you please type in the text of the poem on the hat - I'd love to read it. Welcome to Poetry Friday Land...we're glad you're here! a.
I had a poetry teacher once who compared writing poems to fishing. You need a good place, good bait, and quiet. Now I'll add a fishing hat. Love your diamante with its little twist.
Thank you, Matt and Margaret! Glad you like the metaphor, Matt, about being careful in matters of fishing and poetry. And, Margaret, I love that you had a teacher who once compered poetry writing to fishing. It makes perfect sense! Glad you'll add a fishing hat to your list of writing tools!
With your copyright line, your poem is even SHAPED like a fish! Fun!
Thanks for visiting, Amy, and for welcoming me to Poetry Friday! Yes, a poetry fishing hat would do just as nicely as a fishing poetry hat. Here is the fishing poem - word-for-word - that's on the hat (I love these words of wisdom and the sense of humor):
To Chuck
When you’r Fishing in
your boat and drifting
in the breeze, cast your
line into the River not
in the trees.
Your Pal - Bill
You know, you're right, Mary Lee! Thanks for seeing that; it wasn't planned - it was supposed to be a diamond-shaped poem, but I like how it looks, tail and all.
I thought you planned it to look like a fish, lol
That's a fun find. I can just imagine how you felt when you looked up and saw it there.
Your enthusiasm for writing poetry shines through. I haven't been writing a lot of poetry over the last month and have been sticking more to prose. However I did write one about a week ago that was in response to something someone else shared about how they felt about a good day.
You are right that inspiration for poetry can be found everywhere.
